John C. Osborn is an interactive journalist who enjoys data visualization, web development, and marrying gaming elements with journalism. He knows how to code in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and jQuery, and he is currently developing his Python skills. He currently attends the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, and he is a recipient of the first-ever Google-AP Scholarship for projects at the intersection of tech and journalism.
Freelance - Northern California - March 2009 to Present
For the past several years, I've done a number of freelance assignments and assisted with journalism training sessions. I've done freelance writing, photography, and data viz work with news publications that include the East Bay Express, Oakland North, Bay Citizen, and Patch.com. In terms of trainings, I've assisted the Knight Digital Media Center at Berkeley with a number of trainings, including data viz and multimedia workshops.

I helped create content for a mobile app startup called Scoople. The app is a news aggregator that gamified the news consumption experience of its users by making it competitive by predicting how others would respond to details of news items.
Founder of The Reporta - Arcata, CA - March 2010 to November 2010
This was a news blog I created to cover Humboldt County politics. I covered the Eureka City Council and Humboldt County Board of Supervisor races extensively using multimedia, campaign finance reporting, and collaborations with other journalists.
Project Coordinator for Student Press Law Center - Arcata, CA - January 2009 to April 2009
Worked with students at Humboldt State University on a national FOIA project led by the Student Press Law Center. I helped coordinate assignments, provided feedback on requests and appeals, and maintained a database of the project's progress.
Staff Reporter at Eureka Reporter - Eureka, CA - January 2008 to November 2008
Before the newspaper folded in 2008, I worked the Eureka politics beat and assisted with the newspaper's court coverage. Most notably, I covered the trial of David Gundersen, a former Blue Lake Police Chief on trial for allegedly raping his wife.

While a the helm of this student weekly at Humboldt State University, I facilitated a complete redesign of the publication and helped grow the newspaper's online presence.

Over the course of three semesters, I worked on the Community, Features, and Opinion sections of the weekly newspaper as an editor, where I solicited content, wrote stories, edited, and did layout on the sections.
